Overview

Discover Bandhavgarh

Cradled in the Vindhya hills of Madhya Pradesh, Bandhavgarh is a compact reserve of sal forest, meadows and rocky ridges crowned by a 2,000-year-old fort. Its remarkable tiger density and open grasslands make it one of the finest places on earth to observe wild Bengal tigers.

Why visit

Few reserves offer such consistent tiger presence within a relatively small core. The combination of dramatic escarpments, open meadows and dense forest creates cinematic settings for sightings and photography, while a lineage of famous tigresses has given Bandhavgarh an almost mythical reputation among wildlife travellers.

Wildlife beyond tigers

Leopard, Indian gaur, sloth bear, dhole, spotted deer, sambar, nilgai and over 250 recorded bird species including crested serpent eagle and Malabar pied hornbill.

Landscape & habitat

Sal-dominated forest interspersed with bamboo, grassy maidans and the sandstone cliffs of Bandhavgarh Fort, ranging from around 400 to 800 metres in elevation.

Best time to visit

The reserve is typically open from October to June. The cooler months (Nov–Feb) are comfortable and scenic, while the hotter months (Mar–Jun) often concentrate wildlife around water. We confirm the current season's dates when planning your journey.

How to reach

Nearest airports are Jabalpur (approx. 4 hrs) and Umaria railway station (approx. 1 hr). Many travellers combine Bandhavgarh with Kanha on a single Central India circuit.

Recommended stay

3–4 nights recommended to allow for multiple safari drives across varied zones.
